Will extra time be abolished? UEFA considers changing the Champions League again

After just one year of testing, the format of the new Champions League could undergo some significant changes. According to SportBild, UEFA is actually studying some innovations that the Club Competitions Committee will discuss on May 30, on the eve of the final in Munich, and will then present to the Executive Committee.

In detail, it is reported that some considerations are being made for the abolition of extra time in the knockout stage, for the reinstatement of the derby ban before the quarter-finals and for the possibility of rewarding the teams that finish among the top eight in the “Championship Stage”, giving them the opportunity to play the return matches of the quarter-finals at home and the semi-finals. But let's see in detail, according to what the German daily “Sportbild” writes, what the changes to the regulations being studied would be.

Penalty shootout instead of extra time – In the event of a draw, the 30-minute extra time in the knockout stage can be cancelled and the winner can be determined directly by penalty shootout. The aim is to somewhat reduce the workload of the players, taking into account the numerous complaints from players in recent seasons regarding overload.

Home knockout stage return matches – UEFA wants to reward the top eight clubs in the league stage by giving them the opportunity to play the second legs of their quarter-finals and semi-finals at home against the lowest-ranked teams. At the moment, this mechanism is only valid for the round of 16.

Derby matches banned until the quarterfinals – UEFA is reportedly considering banning derbies between teams from the same country until the quarterfinals, a known policy, as it has been implemented in the past.

At the moment there are only rumors, but what is certain is that the changes applied a year ago in the Champions League will most likely not be the only ones.
