The grand final degenerates, Mitsotakis' nephew spits and tears the shirt of the Olympiacos boss, a massive brawl breaks out!

Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest football club, was involved in a sensational brawl during the Euroleague basketball final. But who is this man who makes news every time he leaves his office?
Sunday night in Athens was supposed to be a celebration. Olympiacos defeated Real Madrid 92-85 to be crowned Euroleague basketball champions, a historic victory for the Greek club. However, the cameras didn't stop at the trophy. They turned to the stands, where the club's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, appeared in a torn shirt and quite noisy.
According to Marinakis, Grigoris Dimitriadis, a former state secretary to the Greek prime minister, spat on him. Marinakis claims he pushed back in self-defense, at which point Dimitriadis tore his shirt. Dimitriadis' lawyer, meanwhile, is considering legal action. The two men were separated by a physical barrier and security personnel, and direct physical contact was not confirmed in the videos circulating online.
Who is the grandson of the Greek Prime Minister?
Dimitriadis is no ordinary figure. He is the nephew of current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In 2022, he resigned from his position as Secretary General to the Prime Minister, following his involvement in the major wiretapping scandal that affected politicians, journalists and other public figures in Greece.
For Marinakis, this incident is not the first time he has been involved in such events.
Who is Evangelos Marinakis?
Born on 30 July 1967 in Piraeus, Marinakis is a powerful Greek businessman and investor, a major shareholder in several companies in the shipping, media and football sectors. The only son of a Cretan shipowner who was also a member of the Greek Parliament, Marinakis was educated in London. He graduated in International Business Administration and completed a master's degree in International Relations before returning to the family cruise business.
In 2005, he founded Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation, a shipping empire that is now worth billions of dollars. His net worth, according to the prestigious Forbes magazine , is estimated at around $5.1 billion.
Great successes in the world of sports
However, it is the world of sport that has made his name internationally known. In 2010, Marinakis bought Olympiacos, his hometown club, and turned it into a real winning machine. Under his leadership, the football team won the Greek championship title for seven consecutive seasons (from 2010/11 to 2016/17), as well as the Greek Cup three times. In 2017, he made the big move into English football. Marinakis bought 80% of Nottingham Forest's shares and, under his management, the club returned to the Premier League in 2022, a major achievement for a team that holds two Champions League trophies. In 2023, he expanded his influence by investing in Rio Ave, a club in the Portuguese elite. In addition to sports, Marinakis is also a dominant figure in Greek media through the company "Alter Ego Media", which owns television channels, radio, and major newspapers and magazines in the country.
A character surrounded by controversy
Marinakis' success has always been accompanied by scandal. In 2024, he was given a five-match ban from the stadium after being found guilty of inappropriate behaviour; he spat on the ground in protest as referees passed him by after Nottingham Forest's defeat to Fulham. That same year, his club were fined £750,000 after an official Forest post on social media questioned the integrity of referee Stuart Attwell after a match against Everton. The Football Association (FA) described the reaction as "irresponsible". At the end of the 2024-25 season, Marinakis stormed onto the pitch and got into a heated argument with manager Nuno Espirito Santo after a 2-2 draw with Leicester City, a result that almost ended Forest's hopes of a Champions League place.
Even Sunday was a double-edged sword for him: while Olympiacos won the Euroleague title in Athens, Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with Bournemouth in the final week of the Premier League, ending the season in 16th place.
Marinakis remains a paradox of our time: a man of undoubted success, with the vision and capital to change the fortunes of the clubs he takes over, but also an uncontrollable figure who often damages his image with gestures off the field of play. That night in Athens, albeit with a torn shirt, his Olympiacos had just conquered Europe. For Marinakis, perhaps that was the only thing that mattered.
