Former Bayern Munich footballer dies after suffering severe head injury

Bayern Munich announced sad news on Thursday. Former German team player Jiaxuan Guo has passed away at the age of 18.

The Chinese footballer suffered a serious injury a few weeks ago during a friendly match in Spain. He was kneed in the head by an opponent and the injury proved fatal, taking his life after weeks of struggle.
Jiaxuan Guo was part of Bayern Munich in the 2023 Club World Cup, as the Bavarians have a tradition of taking talented players to this competition.
"FC Bayern is mourning the passing of Guo Jiaxuan, our former World Cup player, who has died at the age of 18 in his native China. He passed away after suffering a serious head injury following a tragic accident during a training match in Spain on February 6th. The club's thoughts are with his family and friends.
The centre-back was part of FC Bayern's 2023 Club World Cup squad, which gives talented players from around the world the chance to showcase their talent in professional football. Jiaxuan also represented China at youth level," Bayern said in a statement.
On February 6, 2025, during a friendly match between the Beijing U-20 team and Spanish team RC Alcobendas in Madrid, Guo was hit in the head by an opposing player's knee. This caused him to suffer a serious injury, such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a rare type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain.
Emergency medical teams rushed him to a Madrid hospital, where it was discovered he had lost all brain function. After weeks of struggle, Jiaxuan Guo passed away on March 19 in China.
