Football ends in the eyes of the EU against money laundering, new rules for

Professional football ends up on European anti-money laundering radars. The pages of "Il Sole 24 Ore" talk more about this topic, returning to the decision of the European Parliament. Last Tuesday, Strasbourg adopted new rules on the matter, with football as the main target.

In particular, the purchase and sale of football players, the financing of professional football clubs, sponsorships and all operations with agents or other intermediaries are targeted. This is a self-implementing directive, which will become law in all member states within 36 months of its publication in the European Official Journal, regardless of the adaptation of national legislation.

The obligation to trace operations will fall for all professional clubs, except for those with a turnover of less than 5 million euros. Member states, however, will also be able to provide stricter rules. All economic entities operating in football, from members to agents, must undergo adequate due diligence on their clients, with the aim of understanding the client's actual ownership and control structure.

In case of a negative verification, agents and presidents should refrain from closing the deal and report the suspicious transaction attempt.
