At the Olympic Games in Paris, Albania is represented by 8 athletes

The "Paris 2024" Olympic Games have started the countdown, as we are already only 24 days away from the start of the biggest global sports event.

The 33rd edition of the Olympic Games will raise the curtain on July 26, with the opening ceremony in the French capital, an event that will gather 10,500 athletes from all over the world.

There will be a total of 329 events, for 32 different sports disciplines, with the event that will lower the curtain on August 11. In "Paris 2024" Albania will mark its tenth participation in the history of the Olympics, as the red and black team will be formed by eight athletes, four of whom have secured the standard qualification based on sports performance, while the other four go by invitation.

- The athlete Luiza Gega as well as the three wrestlers Zelimkhan Abakarov, Islam Dudaev and Chermen Valiev are the athletes of Albania who go to "Paris 2024" as qualified with the norm.

For Luiza Gega, this will be her third participation in the Olympics, after "Rio 2016" and "Tokyo 2020", while she scored the highest result precisely in the Japanese capital, where she wrote history as the first Albanian athlete to qualify for the finals .

While for the three naturalized Russian wrestlers with Albanian passports, this will be the first time they compete for the red and black flag at the Olympics. Everything started as a strategy of the president of the Albanian Wrestling Federation, Sahit Prizreni, who from the beginning had a fixed thought in his head, bringing these champions closer to aim for the first Olympic medal for Albania.

- In addition to the norms, the Albanian team has also received four invitations to "Paris 2024". Thus, by invitation, Franko Burraj will compete in athletics, Greisi Koxhaku and Kaltra Meça in swimming, as well as Manjola Konini in shooting at the "Paris 2024" Olympic Games.

EXPECTATIONS – Albania is looking for the first Olympic medal in its history and of course the expectations remain on the qualified athletes who are of world caliber.

Looking at the sports performance of the last year, the closest to the medal result are the wrestling athletes, Abakarov, Dudaev and Valiev, who come as medalists in world and European events this year. Also, Luiza Gega always remains at absolute levels in one of the races with the highest rivalry, such as the 3000 meters steeplechase.

CALJA'S RECORD - Albania's highest result in the Olympic Games is held by weightlifter Briken Calja, who came 1 kg closer to the podium, placing fourth in "Tokyo 2020". After several seasons conditioned by numerous physical problems, Calja has not been able to qualify for "Paris 2024". Meanwhile, for the first time in its entire history, Albania will not have a weightlifting athlete at the Olympic Games.
