The 2026 World Cup has officially kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the legendary 'Azteca' stadium in Mexico City.

The 23rd edition of the World Cup, the first with 48 participating national teams, is being organized by three countries: Mexico, the USA and Canada.

The celebrations began with a symbolic message: "Football unites! Welcome to Mexico," while the famous Mexican band Maná electrified the atmosphere at 'Azteca' with its performance.

Later, Mexico's players took to the field to face South Africa in the tournament's first match. The match brought back memories of the 2010 World Cup, when the same two teams faced off in the opening match in Johannesburg.

Italy is not part of this World Cup, but an Italian symbol is not missing from the opening ceremony. Andrea Bocelli performed the official anthem of the tournament, "DNA," along with David Guetta, Megan Thee Stallion and EJAE during the FIFA Countdown concert in Mexico City.

Meanwhile, the artistic organization of the opening ceremony has been entrusted to the Italian company Balich Wonder Studio, led by Marco Balich, known for organizing the Olympic and 2022 World Cup ceremonies in Qatar.

With the opening spectacle and the Mexico-South Africa match, a month of football officially begins that promises emotions, surprises and new stories on the biggest stage of world sports.
