Referee caught betting suspended

Last Wednesday, in the Bulgarian elite championship, CSKA Sofia played Lokomotiv Sofia at the 'Vasil Levski' stadium and won 1-0 after a goal from Olaus Skarsem.
But the match sparked controversy after an incident with one of the VAR operators. Before the match, television cameras focused on the official and his phone for several seconds.
Although the image was not very clear, the official, who was next to two other colleagues in the room, appeared to be watching a football betting app on his mobile device and viewers were amazed to see it live, causing the clip to go viral on social media.
Hawk-Eye Innovations, which controls the VAR system at the highest level of Bulgarian football, moved quickly to suspend the employee "from all activities" while his conduct is investigated.
The company wrote a letter to the Bulgarian Football Union to inform it of the situation, saying: "Hawk-Eye Innovations regretfully acknowledges an incident involving one of its VAR operators during the match between CSKA Sofia and Lokomotiv Sofia yesterday evening (April 2, 2025)."
"Live footage from the camera situation in the VAR operations room documented the individual using a personal smartphone during the match and appeared to be engaging in inappropriate activities that would constitute misconduct in relation to the responsibilities of the designated role."
If the investigation reveals that the employee "was found to have engaged in such inappropriate activity," they will seek to "dismiss the individual in accordance with contractual terms."
