Ronaldo says it openly: I am the best footballer in history, period!

The new program of “La Sexta”, “Los amigos de Edu”, was shown for the first time on Monday, February 3, with a strong debut. The first guest of the journalist Edu Aguirre was the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers of recent times, former player of Real Madrid, who currently plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Arabian Professional League.

The footballer, who has been playing in Saudi Arabia for two years now, is very happy there. “I like living here, my family is happy too,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the well-being of the people around him. “I am a person of challenges, of new and different things. So challenges do not scare me.”

The Portuguese showed that he had no fear of being a "pioneer" of moving to a Saudi club, especially because "I knew that after 1 or 2 years, the league here would be at a high level, even though everything happened faster."

For Ronaldo, it doesn't matter where he plays, as long as he has his family nearby: "The only thing that interests me now is to be with my family and children, to have everything a family can have to be well."

Edu Aguirre, a close friend of Cristiano Ronaldo, asked him in a more personal way how he feels at the moment and how he sees his future in football. The Portuguese turns 40 on February 5, but for him football is not a burden, it simply requires dedication: "Every morning I wake up with the desire to train and play. It's not the same as before, but the passion remains the same."

Regarding his retirement from football, he said: "My story is already written and I could leave football today without any regrets, but I think it would be a shame because I still feel good." He also stressed that "I can continue to make a difference for another year or two."

One of the phrases he often repeated during the interview was that he tries not to think too much about the future, but to focus on the present: "I live very much in the present, I can't think in the long term, because there are things that have happened in my life that have made me change this way of thinking."

Asked how he feels about being one of the most famous people in the world, Cristiano replied that it's not something that bothers him: "I value what I can do, what makes me happy and who makes me happy. It's not my fault that I'm the most famous or the most followed, they're things of life and I'm used to them, but that doesn't make me different from others."

However, he admitted that he is very competitive, to the point that he sometimes forgets to appreciate everything he has achieved in his career. He added that, unlike other players his age, who would have "retired", he still has the passion and desire to continue: "That's why I am different from others. I don't need to brag, but if I do, it's because it's true, and I shouldn't be ashamed of it."

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 922 goals in his career and is very close to reaching 1000 goals. However, he does not want to get hung up on this number: "People are not appreciating my moment, my goals. They are counting down and I don't like that. Things have to happen naturally."

Regarding the 2026 World Cup, he added: "I don't like to think long-term, but everything indicates that I will be there. I would love to be there, but I'm not obsessed with it."

Cristiano has been thinking about his future for years: "Since the age of 28 I have been preparing for the future with projects that motivate me and that can help society and young people, not only on a business level."

But one thing is certain, he doesn't want to be a coach: "I don't want to be a coach, it seems almost impossible. I've played and coached all my life, but I think being a coach is even harder than being a player and my personality wouldn't fit."

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner praised some of Real Madrid's current stars: "Mbappé? I have no doubt he will bring a lot of success to Real Madrid. He is an extraordinary player. Vinícius? He should have won the Ballon d'Or in 2024. These awards have lost their credibility. Bellingham? He has a spectacular future and will help Real Madrid a lot."

CR7 said that "Spain is my home" and that he will always have Real Madrid in his heart. Regarding a return to the "Santiago Bernabéu", he said: "I don't rule it out. Maybe after my career as a footballer I will do something nice there".

The Portuguese played down the weight of the rivalry with Messi: "For 15 years we shared the awards stage and we have always had a good relationship."

Regarding his experience at the Camp Nou: "I liked playing there. They whistled at me, they insulted me..., but I still liked playing in that stadium."

Asked if he considers himself the best in history, Ronaldo replied without hesitation: "The best in history is me, period!"
