"It's absurd," Real Madrid legend criticizes Alvaro

Real Madrid's decision to make a change to the coaching staff has drawn strong criticism from club legend Ivan Helguera, who has publicly questioned the wisdom of the board in sacking Xabi Alonso.

Speaking on a podcast alongside former legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the former Los Blancos midfielder suggested the club acted too quickly by ending a promising project while taking risks with the appointment of Alvaro Arbeloa.

Helguera stressed that Alonso deserved much more patience from the club's management. According to him, despite some tactical doubts, the team had a solid foundation and needed to be given more time to develop before the management decided to sack the coach who previously managed Bayer Leverkusen.

He argued that a fair assessment of the team's real potential under Alonso should have been made much later in the season.

"I think they should have waited until February or March to judge. By then we would have seen how the team was really performing. They were in too much of a hurry to sack Xabi Alonso," Helguera said.

Arbeloa's appointment has also been met with skepticism, as Helguera highlighted his lack of experience at the highest level.

"It's absurd. Arbeloa had never managed in La Liga and the day he was promoted he lost 4-1 to Real Madrid Castilla," he added.

Helguera also criticized Real Madrid's decision to bypass another club legend, Raul Gonzalez, who for six years managed the club's second team after an extraordinary career as a player at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Raul would have managed this situation better, because he was captain and experienced these moments. I don't think Arbeloa was the right choice," Helguera concluded.
