The famous Premier League team suddenly receives a 10-point penalty for

English side Everton have today been hit with a heavy penalty of an immediate 10-point deduction by Premier League authorities for breaching 'profits and sustainability' rules.

This is the heaviest penalty ever handed out in English football and sends the historic Liverpool city side to 19th place (3rd from bottom) with just four points.

The club said today it was "shocked and disappointed" by the unfair and disproportionate decision.

Everton added that they will immediately appeal against the decision.

The Premier League authorities had referred the Everton team to an independent commission of inquiry several months ago but did not reveal the exact nature of the alleged offences.

Everton officials have declared a loss for the fifth consecutive year, as for the 2021-22 season they said the deficit amounted to 44.7 million pounds.

Premier League clubs are allowed to make losses of up to £105m over three years and Everton look set to breach this threshold in the 2021-22 season.

Everton's statement said: "The severity and extent of the punishment is neither fair nor a reflection of the evidence for the offences, we will follow the decisions of the officials for similar situations with other Premier League clubs."

94% of the club's shares are owned by American financiers of the 777 Partners group.

Everton is also building its new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey in Liverpool, which is expected to be ready by the end of 2024.
