Facebook and Messenger with new rules for teenagers

Meta has begun moving teenagers who use Facebook and Messenger to new accounts designed specifically for them, with more security measures and parental supervision options.

The initiative comes as the company says that “hundreds of millions” of teens are now active on its platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Teen accounts were first introduced on Instagram a year ago, and earlier this year they became available on Facebook and Messenger for users in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. Now, Meta is expanding these teen accounts across the globe.

All teen users will automatically be switched to these new accounts, which have been made mandatory for this category. Also, for teens aged 13 to 15, parental permission is required to make changes to security settings.

Meta says it uses artificial intelligence to identify users who may be providing inaccurate age information. The new accounts allow parents to monitor how their children use the platforms, including features to control screen time and monitor the contacts they communicate with.

Furthermore, these accounts are equipped with stronger privacy and security settings, aimed at limiting interactions between teens and unknown adults.

At the same time, Instagram is expanding its program to help elementary and middle schools in the U.S. more quickly report incidents of bullying and problematic behavior. So far, the initiative has been implemented in collaboration with a select group of schools through a “school partnership program.”

Meta says he has received positive feedback from participating institutions and that all schools in the US have the opportunity to apply to become part of the program .
