Meta declares war on ChatGPT

"Access or use of the WhatsApp Business platform is strictly prohibited"...
With this ban, written in WhatsApp's official statement, Meta is ending the presence of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence-generating chatbots on its messaging app.
Starting January 15, 2026, ChatGPT conversations on WhatsApp will be discontinued.
No new messages, no automatic replies, no jokes with artificial intelligence, writes La Repubblica.
A disruption imposed by Meta, which has chosen to ban the use of AI-generated chatbots in its Business API infrastructure, namely the WhatsApp Business Solution, used by developers and companies to create automated services.
In a revision to its Business API terms of use, WhatsApp introduced a clause that effectively prohibits generative artificial intelligence providers, such as OpenAI (ChatGPT), Perplexity, Luzia, or Poke, from distributing their services on the platform.
The provision, specifically aimed at “Artificial Intelligence Providers,” prohibits the use of WhatsApp’s infrastructure for technologies whose primary functionality is artificial intelligence chat.
Meta closes the doors to "generalist" chatbots and defends its business model.
According to Meta, the WhatsApp Business API is designed for business use cases, customer support, reservations, etc., but not to host chatbots in conversations.
The explosion of AI-generated messages has burdened infrastructure without generating financial returns, because “generalist” bots do not fit into WhatsApp’s monetization model, which is based on paid interactions between businesses and customers.
In other words, Meta decided to close a channel that was consuming resources without generating revenue, protecting the perimeter of his business and, at the same time, consolidating the role of his proprietary assistant, Meta AI.
