Meta gives parents more control over teens' interactions with AI

Meta is adding parental controls for children's interactions with artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, including the ability to completely turn off individual conversations with AI characters, starting early next year, according to Euronews.
However, parents will not be able to disable Meta's AI assistant, which, according to the company, "will remain available to provide useful information and educational opportunities, with age-appropriate protections for teens."
Parents who don't want to turn off all conversations with all chatbots will also have the option to block just some of them.
Meta announced today that parents will be able to get a "summary" of what their children are talking about with AI characters, although they will not have access to the full content of the conversations.
These changes come as the social media giant faces continued criticism over the harm its platforms can cause to children.
AI chatbots are also under scrutiny for how they interact with children, as several lawsuits allege that these interactions have led some young people to commit suicide.
However, more than 70 percent of teenagers have used AI-based virtual friends and half use them regularly, according to a recent study by the nonprofit organization Common Sense Media, which promotes the sensible use of screens and digital media.
Meta announced that teenage Instagram accounts will be automatically limited to "PG-13" level content and will not be able to change these settings without parental permission.
This means that children using teen accounts will see photos and videos on Instagram similar to what they would see in a “PG-13” rated movie — without sex, drugs, or dangerous scenes.
Meta said that these "PG-13" restrictions will also apply to conversations with AI.
