UN: Humans are the main cause of forest fires

World Meteorological Organization expert Sara Basart stated that most of the forest fires that have been increasing recently in the world are caused by humans.

In an assessment of forest fires in Europe, Basart said that these fires have a strong link to climate change. Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts increase the risk of forest fires.

She added that the increasing number of fires should motivate governments to take measures and mobilize resources to reduce these risks.

“Fires occur due to various factors, but in most cases they are caused by human intervention,” Basart said. She emphasized that firefighting strategies are necessary for the prevention and control of fires.

The expert also noted that expanding droughts and heat waves due to climate change are further increasing the risk of forest fires.
