Student-led demonstrators have clashed with Albanian police in Tirana for the third day in a row, joining a broader anti-government movement.

On Thursday, student-led demonstrators clashed with Albanian police for the third day in a row in the capital Tirana, joining a broader anti-government movement.

Young people protesting against the long-standing socialist government threw stones at the police cordon in front of the Ministry of Education. Riot police responded with tear gas and water cannons. Several demonstrators were detained by police.

The latest clashes follow unrest on Wednesday, when protesters attacked government buildings, banks and businesses. According to the Health Ministry, 89 people were injured, including 61 police officers.

The protests are led by student groups demanding education reforms. They have joined the so-called “Flamingo Movement,” which is demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over allegations of widespread corruption and opposes a major luxury tourism project on Albania’s southern coast.

On Thursday, high school students joined thousands of protesters in marches in the center of the capital, chanting "Rama, resign!" and paralyzing traffic in the city.

“We will be in the square every day,” Mateo Yskollari, one of the prominent organizers of the protest, wrote in an online post. “Our response to any attempt to silence us will be the expansion of the protest, civic mobilization and civil disobedience.”

Although the protests have been largely peaceful, they have turned violent as demonstrators have clashed with police cordons. Groups of youth have also broken away from the rallies to attack government buildings and business windows.

On Thursday, Rama greeted workers cleaning damaged areas and released a video message from a burned-out university building.

He directly accused political opponents of inciting violence and promised to remain in office as prime minister to further Albania's efforts for membership in the European Union.

"We will all get through these difficult hours together, because Albania will continue to climb, because Albania will continue its path towards Europe," he said. "No one can grab Albania by the throat. Anyone who thinks that the law does not apply to them is wrong."

Rama's Socialists won a fourth consecutive mandate in last year's elections, while Albania is not expected to hold another parliamentary election until 2029.

The Democratic Party, the main conservative opposition force, supported the student protests and asked Rama to appoint a caretaker government to prepare early elections.

“This movement is not simply a protest against the government ,” the party declared. “It is a revolt against a governance model created by Edi Rama, which has stolen the hope of young people, violated the trust of citizens and is increasingly distancing Albania from its European future.”

A European Union delegation to Albania called on Wednesday evening for authorities to respond proportionately, expressing concern about the “violent escalation of the protest in Tirana.” /Washington Post
