Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos referred to seismologists' concerns about earthquakes shifting south from the epicenter of the fault that caused the deadly February 6 earthquake in Turkey, who warned of strong earthquakes in Greece as well.
" The truth is that this region of the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey-Syria, is characterized by the presence of three very large faults. And when we say very large, each of them is hundreds of kilometers long, such as the Eastern Anatolian fault, which was activated a few weeks ago with two very large earthquakes and all those that followed", said the well-known seismologist.
Analyzing the seismic sequence in an area of 300 km in the Turkish countryside, he noted that the aftershocks have reached this triple junction, where these three major faults meet, very close to the Antioch region.
Answering the question whether there is a risk that the earthquakes will move south, towards Cyprus, Papadopoulos emphasized that the areas that could be mainly affected by the big earthquake, the main one, were the regions closest to Turkey and Syria.
"At the end of the conflict on the border of Turkey and Syria, but also very close to Cyprus, a very strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred. This is not something that is out of the normal and expected range. On the contrary, it is within expectations" , he emphasized for Hellas.
