Punishment in England, prison in Albania! The "cocaine lord", from 25

The Tirana court has recognized a decision of the English justice against Erald Mema, otherwise labeled as the Lord of Cocaine.

This decision was given within the framework of the agreement between Great Britain and Albania, which aims to bring some Albanian prisoners who will serve their sentences in Albania.

Out of 25 years in prison, the court in Albania awarded Erald Mema a 15-year sentence, a decision which will then be sent back to England as well as to other citizens who have requested to be transferred to Albanian prisons.

The court said that there are conditions for Mema to be sentenced for the unserved part of the sentence, since the request of the sentencing state has been administered in the dossier and that the accused is an Albanian citizen. For the so-called "lord" of cocaine who was accused of leading a group of 19 people for the distribution of cocaine, the British media mentioned after his conviction that he led the sale of drugs in some cases from Albania as well.

On October 3, 2023, the General Prosecutor's Office in Tirana delegated to the Tirana Prosecutor's Office the English request for recognition of the decision. The documents mention not only a 2018 Oxford Crown verdict in which Mema was convicted of conspiracy to supply a Class A controlled drug.

The English add that in two cases the 39-year-old cooperated with other citizens to supply a person with cocaine. The context of the agreement between the two countries for the transfer of prisoners is also mentioned, recalling that despite the fact that the consent of the convict is not needed in this case, the authorities have provided a statement of consent from the 39-year-old to serve the sentence in his country.

Some courts have also started recognizing decisions to transfer prisoners from England.

In Albania, 48 such requests are being examined, which will then be forwarded to Great Britain. Meanwhile, within two years, according to the agreement, 200 prisoners are expected to be transferred, of which 17 are life sentences./ Top Channel
