Davide Pecorelli, the Italian businessman who staged the death in Puka, will be extradited to our country within days to serve his sentence.
He will have to serve 4 years in prison for fraud, desecration of graves and obstruction of justice.
He has stated that his only concern is his family.
"I'm not afraid. I'm worried about my family, my children, my father and my disabled brother ," he said.
Regarding the decision to hand him over to Albanian justice, he said that he is being treated like a second-class citizen and that he is being treated like a great injustice.
"A difficult decision to accept makes me think about a persecution plan. I have never denied having committed crimes in Albania and I have compensated for damages beyond their value, as in the case of the car I had set on fire. I have no criminal record and I am a former army officer, an entrepreneur who has given work to hundreds of other people."
He has announced that he will start the process of obtaining Albanian citizenship. His wife is Albanian, they married in December 2023. As is his son. Once he obtains citizenship, he will give up his Italian citizenship because he feels "betrayed" by his country, according to Italian media.
He had disappeared from Italy in January 2021 when he faked his death in Albania to escape his creditors.
The rental car was found on fire in Puka with some human remains inside. It was then tracked down some time later in Italy, near the island of Montecristo.
