Albanian mafia clan, 1 million euros to kill Belgian prosecutor

Eight people have been arrested in connection with an investigation into an alleged plot to attack Brussels public prosecutor Julien Moinil, Le Soir reports. The arrested are suspected of being part of an Albanian clan involved in drug trafficking.

Belgian media writes that this morning, 18 raids were carried out as part of the investigation into death threats against the King's Prosecutor in Brussels, Julien Moinil, confirmed to the newspaper Le Soir. The Federal Prosecution. A few days ago, international investigative media reported that the Albanian mafia had put a price of 1 million euros on his head.

The checks were carried out mainly in Brussels, but also in Leuven. Eight people were detained and are currently being questioned.

"After questioning, the judge will decide whether they will remain in custody," the prosecution adds.

During July 2025, the federal prosecution was informed by the federal judicial police of Brussels of a possible plot to carry out an assassination attempt on the King's Prosecutor in Brussels.

"The main suspects appear to have criminal records related to organized drug trafficking. It is suspected that they are active within Albanian criminal networks," the public ministry emphasizes.

"Over the past few months, the Brussels federal judicial police, under the direction of a judge assigned to the case by the federal prosecutor's office, has conducted an in-depth investigation into all the information.

The federal police have been engaged in this direction for several months. Even within the Federal Prosecutor's Office, several prosecutors have been tasked with pursuing this case.”

"Police and magistrates must be better protected"

According to Le Soir, this threat from an Albanian clan is not the only one targeting Julien Moinil. But it was a threat considered very serious by all security services. However, the Federal Prosecutor's Office does not want to declare victory yet, as it emphasizes: "At this stage, it is not possible to confirm or deny the plot to carry out an assassination attempt on the King's Prosecutor in Brussels." In other words, "investigations continue" against the eight people arrested on Tuesday.

“This investigation once again demonstrates the absolute need to better protect police officers and magistrates, who fight every day, without rest, against organized crime and who, for this reason, become targets of these criminal organizations,” comments Federal Prosecutor Ann Fransen. “To this end, the Minister of Justice, at the request of the public ministry among others, has set up a working group in which prosecutors from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office also participate, which is preparing legal initiatives,” writes the Belgian media.
