Prime Minister Edi Rama has threatened mayors, after he said he has received complaints from citizens that some of them are leaving their jobs and communities to come to Tirana.
Rama said that the complaints are mainly in the southeastern area of the country, specifically on the Tirana-Korça axis.
During an activity to modernize the electronic communications infrastructure in the territory of municipalities, Rama warned that if the situation continues, he will also make the names of the mayors public in the future.
While expelling the mayor of Korça, the prime minister threatened him, saying that "the sweet smile should not turn into a bitter smile."
"I'm closing with a remark about some of the mayors, I don't want to mention them by name. They have become a bit of a problem for the community, as they don't stay in the community all week, but come to Tirana even on the days when they should be on duty there. This practice must end. It's not all of them, but it's some. Meanwhile, the example of the current minister of local government, who comes from a service experience outside of Tirana, even though his home is in Tirana, is an example that some mayors should keep in mind. I don't want to mention them by name today, but next time I will have to mention them by name and publicly. They leave the community and their duty before actually arriving at what is the official moment of leave, which is also a matter of discussion there, and come to Tirana. This is not justifiable and is not acceptable. I believe that I have all your understanding for addressing this concern an hour ago, which is a concern that has come to me repeatedly from some of your communities, mainly in the southeast of the country, on the axis Tirana-Korca. We recall that for almost a month, thousands of citizens have been gathering every day in Tirana to protest and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Rama.
