Two brothers of the underworld in Albania, Astri and Altin Avdylaj, have been issued arrest warrants by the Special Prosecutor's Office, SPAK, among 50 others.

According to the sources, the investigations started after the transcripts of the conversations through the "Sky" codes that these people used with each other.

Astrit Avdylaj, nicknamed Ničja, is known as the leader of Shijak's gang and he has been accused of drugs, murder, prostitution, but also of strong political ties, together with his brother Altin Avdylaj.

The mass operation of October 2018 "Vol-Vo 4" arrested a total of 22 people. According to the Court of Serious Crimes, it turned out that there were connections between some of the most prominent criminal organizations in the country, which trafficked cocaine and heroin from Latin America to the countries of the European Union, led by Shijaku and Maminasi, while for cannabis they were engaged and other criminal organizations. The Avdylaj gang in Shijak cooperated with the Bajra gang in Shkodër and the Ndokaj gang in Lezhë.

At their head was the well-known Astrit Avdyli or otherwise Astrit Balliu, who was involved in drug trafficking from Albania to Italy. Investigations on this matter have been started since December 2016.

The criminal journey of the Avdylas started in the 90s, where Dritan Avdyli, the first cousin of Astri Avdyli, was shot dead in 1996.

Astrit Avdyli, the son of Dritan's uncle, previously convicted of prostitution in Italy, took revenge by killing the person who ambushed Dritan in the center of Shijak. The revenge did not stop there, as Astrit's brother Shkëlqimi killed Durim Kusi in Tirana.

Other family members, such as Jasmin Avdyli or Flamur Avdyku, are connected to the world of crime. In early 2019, VOA and BIRN conducted an investigation of file 339, focusing on one of the leaders of the Avdylaj group, who was released from prison for murder before serving his sentence. Astrit Avdyli was released 3 years before the end of his sentence after being examined with "depression and suicide attempts".

The German media "Bild" published his conversations with the former head of the Durrës Municipality, Vangjush Dako, where they talked about securing votes, but also about influence in the selection of candidates for SP deputies in this district in the 2017 elections.

Sentenced to 16 years in prison for a murder that occurred in 1997, Avdyli waged a 10-year legal battle for early release from Shënkolli prison—and ultimately won.

Court documents show that Astrit Avdyli was released after 13 years in prison after previously providing a medical report diagnosing him with "endogenous depression with suicidal attempts". He was released from prison on March 2, 2016, after the Supreme Court ordered his release on the grounds that "staying in prison would endanger his life."

The data provided by BIRN show that just a short time after his release from prison, Avdyli was placed under investigation for involvement in the trafficking of hard drugs.

For two and a half years, the Serious Crimes Prosecutor's Office conducted hundreds of hours of wiretapping and changed three groups of prosecutors, until in October 2018 it filed charges against 44 people accused of international drug trafficking, corruption, exercising illegal influence or massive forgery with properties.

Astrit Avdylaj was released from the detention cell two years after the sensational arrest, in July 2021 and ended up in 'house arrest'./ TCH
