January rains damaged 4 cultural monuments, many others at risk

The early-year rainfall has caused serious damage to at least four cultural monuments in the country, while about ten other objects are in a dilapidated state or at risk.
"In the Berat district, damage has been found to the stone masonry of the Palec Bridge, in the village of Tozhar, in Poliçan, a First Category Cultural Monument, where the stones have been completely detached," said the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports in a response to Amfora Media.
Damage has also been reported in several other buildings in the south of the country, according to reports from regional directorates.
"There was damage to the following buildings: Ura e Katiu in Përmet, the Lolomani apartment in the 'Pazar i Vjetër' neighborhood in Gjirokastër, where part of the wall collapsed; the surrounding wall of the exterior of the Leusa church, Përmet, as well as minor damage to the roofs of several cultural monument apartments in Gjirokastër," the Ministry explained.
After field inspections, heritage institutions have also identified a number of monuments in a dilapidated state or at risk of degradation.
"In the cultural monuments, the building of the former old prison in the Elbasan Castle, part of the roof has collapsed and there are cracks in the walls; the wall of the Elbasan Castle with damage in the southern part; the apartment of Eleni Papajani in the 'Kala' neighborhood, Elbasan, is in a very dilapidated state; the apartment of Staf Nikollë Papajani with problems with the roof and general dilapidation; as well as the building where the Labinot Conference was held, in a very dilapidated state and at risk," the institution explained.
Also identified are: the Stone Bridge in Grabovo e Sipërme, which appears relatively dilapidated; the monastery of Saint John Vladimir in Bradashesh, with damage to a fragment of the surrounding wall; the Turan Tower in a degraded state; the Golik Bridge, stable but in need of restoration and consolidation; and the church of Saint Kolli in Voskopoja, with problems in the roof.
Many of these monuments present damage accumulated over the years and are classified as objects in a depreciated state or at risk. The problems are mainly related to the gradual degradation of the structures and the lack of timely restoration interventions.
Restoration projects have been drafted and approved for some of the damaged or at-risk monuments, while others have been included in budget planning for the coming years, without setting concrete deadlines for the start of interventions.
According to the Ministry, full restoration interventions are expected in facilities such as the Paleci Bridge in Poliçan, several historic residences and the Labinot Conference building in Elbasan, as well as in other monuments for which projects are in progress or awaiting funding during the years 2026 - 2028.
Emergency interventions have been undertaken in some of the damaged buildings to stabilize the structures and guarantee safety. Meanwhile, according to reports from heritage institutions, no damage was detected in the historic center of Berat, in the monuments administered by DRTK Shkodër and Vlora, while the protective system of the Lead Mosque in Shkodër was functional during the rainfall.
The winter season continues to highlight the inherited problems of cultural monuments in the country, showing that the lack of maintenance and timely interventions makes them more exposed to damage whenever they face difficult weather conditions./ Amfora.al
