60 kg of cocaine trafficked, two Albanians arrested in Italy, drug

An operation carried out by the Guardia di Finanza and the Parma Command has led to the arrest of three people suspected of drug trafficking, two of whom are Albanian citizens.

According to Italian authorities, the arrested are accused of trafficking around 60 kilograms of cocaine, with a market value exceeding 4 million euros. One of them, an Italian citizen, has been placed under house arrest, while the two Albanians have been remanded in custody. They also face money laundering charges.

The investigations began a year ago by the Economic and Financial Police Unit in Parma, when 8.4 kg of cocaine and 41 thousand euros in cash were seized, hidden in a false bottom of a vehicle driven by one of the Albanian suspects.

The investigation revealed that one of the Albanians acted as a courier, using an Italian collaborator to evade controls during trips to Northern Italy. They transported large quantities of drugs to regions such as Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont and Tuscany.

To conceal their activity, the two used encrypted phones and communicated in disguised terms, referring to the drugs with words like “ham,” “beer,” “chicken,” or “bread.” They also preferred isolated areas or dead-end streets to make deliveries.

Authorities say the couriers have profited at least 51,000 euros from this activity, an amount that has already been seized. Meanwhile, another Albanian involved in the scheme is suspected of having developed an extensive distribution network in Parma, with over 300 documented sales.

Following the investigations, two other Albanian individuals are under investigation for money laundering, as they are suspected of having transferred illegal profits to yet unidentified third parties.

The operation has uncovered a well-organized criminal network, while the initial drug seizure alone has caused the illegal market a loss of over 580 thousand euros.
