Tragedy in Pakistan! A building collapses in Karachi, 7 dead and several trapped

At least seven people were killed and eight others injured in Pakistan's largest city Karachi on Sunday after a five-story building collapsed, authorities said, with several people still trapped under the rubble.

About 100 people were living in the collapsed building, local police officer Arif Aziz told AFP. Rescue teams and local residents are working to pull out survivors after the tragedy occurred at 8:10 a.m. local time.

According to Saad Edhi from the Edhi Foundation, which is participating in the rescue operation, it is thought that 8 to 10 people may be trapped under the rubble.

One of the residents, 30-year-old Shankar Kamho, who was outside at the time of the incident, told AFP: "The woman called me and said the building had started to crack. I told her to get out immediately. She went to warn the neighbors, but a woman told her that the building 'will last for 10 years'. Then she took our daughter and went out. 20 minutes later, the building collapsed."

Seven bodies have been pulled from the rubble so far and eight injured people have received medical attention, according to local emergency authorities.

Another resident, 70-year-old Jumho Maheswari, said six members of his family were inside the ground-floor apartment when he went out for work. “My entire family is under the rubble… I can only pray that they come out alive,” he said.

Such incidents are not uncommon in Pakistan, where building codes are often flouted and poor materials are used. In June 2020, a 40-unit apartment building collapsed in the same area, killing 18 people.
