"Burned" by vetting in 2023, the former Tirana prosecutor is appointed director of Customs Investigation

Former Tirana prosecutor, Elio Mazreku, has been appointed the new director of Customs Investigation, taking on a new position in public administration.
Mazreku comes to this position after a long career in the justice system, where since 2000 he has served as a prosecutor in the Tirana District Prosecutor's Office for more than two decades.
His appointment also brings back into focus the vetting process, where in November 2023, Elio Mazreku was dismissed from office by decision of the Independent Qualification Commission.
According to the financial analysis conducted by the Independent Qualification Commission, it resulted in a negative balance of 22.8 million lek, related to the lack of evidence for the legality of several bank accounts used in the purchase of a 129 square meter apartment in 2010.
Also, according to what the KPK reported at the time, Mazreku failed to justify around 5 million lek declared as aid from his father, as well as several gifts received from his brother.
For his part, he has contested the vetting body's conclusions, stating that the income was legal and stemmed from his wife's work at a non-profit organization, while emphasizing that the manner in which the payments were made was not under his control.
