DASH official meets with Duman and prosecutors/ Nephew: The US is committed to ending impunity

The US government's Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator, Richard Nephew, is in Tirana to reaffirm the United States' support for justice reforms, anti-corruption efforts and good governance.
There was also a meeting this afternoon with the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani and prosecutors of SPAK and representatives of other justice institutions.
Also, from the photos posted on Facebook, it appears that Richard Nepheë has seen the mountain of files in the offices of SPAK up close.
"Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator Richard Nepheë saw the Albanian judicial institutions in action today during meetings with the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, SPAK prosecutors, as well as representatives of the Anti-Corruption Ministry, the High Inspectorate of Declaration and Control of Assets and Conflict of Interest (ILDKPKI) and the Public Procurement Agency. Nephew and Albanian officials discussed the ongoing efforts to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and the fight against corruption. The United States will continue to support the institutions of justice that are strengthening Albania's democracy as it progresses on its way to the EU
The US is committed to ending impunity
Previously, there was a meeting with representatives of the Albanian civil society and media to hear their views on the fight against corruption and the advancement of transparency in governance.
"The United States is committed to ending impunity on a global scale, including by supporting organizations that play an important oversight role," Nephew said at the meeting, the US embassy reports.
Nephew was received by the US envoy to our country, David Wisner.
In a post shared on social networks, the embassy writes that the visit of the envoy of the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, reaffirms US support in the fight against corruption and justice reforms.
"Today we welcome Richard Nephew, US State Department Coordinator for Global Anti-Corruption. Nephew is visiting Albania to reaffirm the United States' support for justice reforms, anti-corruption efforts and good governance. During his stay in Albania, he will meet with leaders of justice and Albanian civil society, as well as with public officials", writes the US embassy.
Biden extended the state of emergency order in the Western Balkans.
The visit comes 5 days after the President of the United States, Joe Biden, extended for another year the executive order for states of emergency in the Balkans, assessing that the situation in the Balkans continues to pose a threat to national security and US foreign policy. For this reason, according to the announcement, the state of emergency for the Balkans should remain in force even after June 26, 2024. On June 8, 2021, "Executive Order 14033" was approved, which expanded the scope of the state of emergency at the national level.
This order states that the situation in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and in Albania during the last two decades - including the violation of post-war agreements and institutions after the collapse of Yugoslavia, as well as widespread corruption in various governments and institutions in the Balkans - prevents progress towards effective and democratic governance and full integration into transatlantic institutions.
The meeting with representatives of justice and the attack of Berisha and Meta
Part of the agenda of the meetings is also those with representatives of justice institutions, where it is expected to emphasize Albania's support in the fight against corruption and strengthening the rule of law.
This visit comes at a time when SPAK is being attacked by the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha in the corruption investigation and declared non grata by the USA and the United Kingdom but also by his ally Ilir Meta, the former president of Albania.
Even today at the round table with donors organized by the Ministry of the Interior, the acting Deputy Head of Mission of the US Embassy, Kathryn Hammand said that the US is investing in strengthening the rule of law in Albania, but added that this is a task that cannot be done alone and requires actions and efforts from all institutions and actors.
"Corrupt officials are being brought to justice, members of organized crime are going to prison and losing their assets. This is a very powerful process, which is moving forward, - said Mrs. Hammand. - The USA, - she added, - will continue to strongly support Albania and its efforts, which are essential for membership in the European Union, which is what the Albanian people want". / Shqiptarja.com
