7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines, at least 15 dead and over 120 injured, authorities warn of tsunami

At least 15 people have been killed and 129 others injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines in the early hours of Monday morning.
The earthquake struck off the coast near the city of General Santos on the island of Mindanao, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reporting that the tremor had a depth of 10 kilometers, making it particularly strong and felt at the surface.
After the earthquake, several countries in the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan, issued tsunami warnings due to fears of large waves. However, most of these warnings were later lifted as the risk was deemed limited.
Emergency teams have been deployed to the affected areas to search for survivors, provide medical assistance, and assess the material damage caused by the earthquake.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he had ordered all relevant government agencies to immediately respond to the situation. He urged residents of coastal areas and those at risk to move to higher ground as a safety precaution.
Authorities warn that there may be aftershocks in the coming hours and days, while the death toll and injured may change as search and rescue operations continue.
