6.2 magnitude earthquake shakes New Zealand

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the west coast of New Zealand. No tsunami warning was issued, and there was no immediate report of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at around 1 a.m. local time.

The epicenter was 300 kilometers southwest of the city of Invercargill, and the depth of the focus was a shallow 10 kilometers below sea level. New Zealand has a population of about five million and is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” – a seismically active zone made up of volcanoes that surround the Pacific Ocean. It is where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0-6.9 is considered strong. It can cause damage even to well-prepared buildings. Every year, 100 to 150 such earthquakes occur in the world.
