500 dead birds on the west coast of France, due to bad weather conditions
More than 500 seabirds have been found dead since the start of the year along France's west coast, exhausted by unusually strong winter storms that prevent them from feeding, the French Union for the Protection of Birds says.

Antoine Prevel, a volunteer with the non-profit organization Sea Shepherd, noted that some seabirds are found dead on the French coast at the end of every winter, but not on such a large scale. Scientists estimate that the seabirds died of exhaustion due to bad weather conditions.

"Climate change is the main cause, as it increases the frequency and intensity of storms, especially winter storms," explained Jerome Fort of France's National Center for Scientific Research.

"Microplastic poisoning and chemical pollution can also deplete seabirds, which are foraging ever closer to shore due to climate change and overfishing," Fort added.
