US warship to enter Croatian port, Zagreb gives approval

The Government of the Republic of Croatia, in a closed session on Thursday, made the decision to grant permission for a US nuclear warship to enter the internal waters of the Republic of Croatia and stay in a Croatian port.

Details about the exact ship in question have not yet been announced, as well as the date of arrival and length of stay.

However, since the government announced that it is a nuclear-powered ship, it is likely to be one of the American aircraft carriers.

As further noted, the ship's arrival requires special security protocols, including the control and monitoring of the nuclear facility during its stay in port and the securing of the port and surrounding waters in cooperation with local security services.

According to Croatian media, American warships have visited Croatia before, which is seen as a sign of strong partnership with the United States and cooperation within NATO.

Most prominent among them is the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which visited Split in June 2023 as part of a scheduled port stop and cooperation with the Croatian Armed Forces.

That carrier sailed into Croatian waters again in October 2025 during a deployment to Europe, and it is possible that this time it will be this very carrier.

Visits by US warships to Croatia are usually treated as part of regular naval operations and exercises, but also as a symbol of the close bilateral relations and security cooperation between Croatia and the US.

The Croatian government has not yet said when the ship will arrive and in which port it will be stationed, or whether this visit is related to current global security challenges, primarily the war in Iran.
