Meloni welcomes EP decision on migrant return centers

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni today welcomed the European Parliament's decision on migrant return centers.
"The European Parliament today gave the green light to new repatriation rules: Europe is finally moving in the right direction, following a path that Italy has strongly supported," the prime minister declared on social media, emphasizing that "with return centers, the possibility of identifying a place of repatriation for illegal migrants is expanded to include not only countries of origin, but also third countries."
For Meloni, "this is an important step towards making repatriations more effective, strengthening border control and giving Europe a more credible migration policy."
The European Parliament gave the green light today, with 389 votes in favor, 206 against and 32 abstentions, to the start of interinstitutional negotiations on the so-called Return Directive.
They expand the possibilities for identifying a “country of return”, including not only the country of origin, but also third countries.
Furthermore, compared to current legislation, the proposal gives priority to forced repatriation over voluntary departure and foresees the possibility of establishing return centres in third countries.
