Canada imposes additional sanctions against Iran

Ottawa today announced additional sanctions against Iranian businessmen and companies linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's ideological army.

"Five individuals and four entities targeted by the sanctions are accused of supporting non-state militias and terrorist groups affiliated with Tehran and supplying them with weapons and technology that contribute to the destabilization of the Middle East," according to a statement from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.

"Canada will impose consequences on those who contribute to Iran's destabilizing activities," the statement said, specifying that the country is now imposing sanctions on 227 Iranian individuals and 260 entities.

In contrast, and in the hope of stopping the rise in energy prices caused by the war in the Middle East, the United States eased its sanctions against Iranian oil last Friday.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed today that the country had achieved NATO's target of allocating 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to military spending ahead of schedule.

"This is our highest level of defense spending, relative to the size of our economy, since the fall of the Berlin Wall," he declared from a military base in Halifax, in eastern Canada.
