Haitian gangs attack prison in Mireabalais town, free 500 prisoners

Gangs in Haiti attacked the town of Mirebalais on Monday and freed about 500 prisoners from prison, the BBC reports.

A Haitian police spokesman said additional forces had been sent to the town, which is located about 50 kilometers northeast of the capital Port-au-Prince.

Police say they have regained control of Mirebalais, but local media reports that the released prisoners have not yet been captured.

Armed gangs are under control of almost the entire capital, but recently they are also targeting other cities.

Armed men burned buildings and vehicles, and attacked a police station and a prison where around 500 prisoners were being held.

It is reported that the attackers belonged to two gangs – “400 Mawoso” and “Taliban” – which form part of the Viv Ansam gang coalition and control the northern part of Port-au-Prince.
