FIFA considering changes to host cities for 2030 World Cup in Spain

FIFA has the power to change the host countries of the 2030 World Cup - which will be organized by Portugal, Spain and Morocco - unilaterally, according to a confidential document accessed by Spanish newspaper AS.

The federations of the three countries will submit their proposals, but the final decision will be made by FIFA.

Spain has planned to have 11 stadiums and 9 host cities, with Barcelona and Madrid expected to each have two stadiums.

FIFA has doubts about Atletico Madrid's stadium

The newspaper 'AS' writes that one of Madrid's stadiums, in this case 'Metropolitano', home of Atletico Madrid, has raised some doubts within FIFA.

The Madrid club is considering whether it would be more profitable to make the stadium available for concerts and other events, or to block it for two full months for FIFA, as required by regulations.

In this scenario, there are two options in play: Vigo and Valencia. If Atletico Madrid withdraw, then Valencia is the favorite to take its place as host city, while Vigo will be an alternative in case of any other change.

The 'La Rosaleda' stadium (Málaga) must be expanded to reach the minimum capacity of 40,000 seats required by FIFA.

Borja Vivas, sports advisor in Málaga, has stressed that the city will meet the deadlines to be one of the host cities of the 2030 World Cup.

Portugal's stadiums for the 2030 World Cup

In Portugal, the World Cup matches will be held at the 'Estádio da Luz' (Benfica), 'Estádio do Dragão' (Porto) and 'Estádio José' Alvalade (Sporting CP).
