The German army will be equipped with drones for the first time

German soldiers will be armed with explosive drones for the first time, two Defense Ministry sources said Thursday, as Berlin tries to catch up with the level of technology that has shown destructive power in Ukraine.
Both Russia and Ukraine have used these single-use drones, which fly towards the target and then fall rapidly, exploding upon contact.
The effort to buy armed drones has been controversial in Germany, with some politicians linking them to extrajudicial killings by US forces in Afghanistan.
It took years of heated debate before parliament approved in 2022 the possibility of using a large drone like the Heron TP, which flies at much higher altitudes and can carry weapons.
Last month, parliament approved a plan for an increase in defense spending, worth several hundred billion euros.
Contracts with two companies for a first batch of explosive drones will be signed in the coming days, the sources said, without naming the companies. The army and navy will test them in the coming months.
Germany will aim to sign long-term contracts by the end of the year for a larger number of drones, shortening the period for introducing new weapons, which usually takes years.
As drone technology is rapidly developing, the agreements will stipulate that companies supply a limited initial number for training purposes and may later be required to supply larger numbers of the latest models, if necessary.
