Britain moves towards banning social media for under-16s

The British government is considering banning the use of social media for under-16s as part of measures to increase children's safety in the digital space. The initiative also includes placing restrictions on some artificial intelligence chatbots.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer launched a public consultation process on the issue last month. According to British media, the government is working to have the legal changes approved immediately after the consultation ends, with the aim of speeding up the entry into force of the new measures.
The plan envisions a ban similar to the model implemented by Australia, which became the first country in the world to ban access to social media for people under 16.
British authorities also aim to close legal loopholes that have so far left out of regulation some AI platforms and chatbots, which were not fully covered by existing online safety rules.
