BBC: US ​​ready to attack Iran, US military heading to Middle East

The BBC has been monitoring the buildup of US military forces in the Middle East over the past few weeks, as Washington continues to put pressure on the Iranian government over its nuclear program.

Following reports that the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Gulf region on January 26, the BBC has located it in satellite images captured yesterday.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was not visible in the images until that moment.

But, using publicly available imagery from the European Sentinel-2 satellites, which are widely used for ship surveillance, the Abraham Lincoln was identified in the Arabian Sea – about 240km off the coast of Oman.

US officials have also said that a second aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, is being deployed to join the Abraham Lincoln and other military assets recently deployed to the region.

There have been reports in recent days that the US military is planning a possible sustained campaign against Iran if President Donald Trump orders an attack.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, warning that Tehran's failure to reach a deal would be "very traumatic."
