Castro to face the same fate as Maduro? US plans to indict former Cuban leader

The US Justice Department is reportedly preparing to file charges against former Cuban leader Raul Castro in the coming days over the downing of two airliners three decades ago.

The reported charges, which would have to be approved by a US jury, emerged as the CIA director traveled to Cuba to meet with officials in Havana.

Castro, 94, stepped down as leader of the Cuban Communist Party in 2021, ending his family's more than half a century in power. He led the country for 15 years, taking office after his brother, Fidel, stepped down.

The potential lawsuit is the latest move in a US pressure campaign that has included an oil blockade and broad sanctions.

The charges reportedly center on the 1996 downing of two planes operated by the American humanitarian activist group Brothers for Salvation.

US Department of Justice (DoJ) officials, who have not been named, told US media that the indictment could be filed as early as next Wednesday.

Asked Friday about the reported plan to sue, President Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One: "I'll let the Justice Department comment on that."

He added: "But the Cubans need help, as you know. And you talk about a country in decline. They are actually a nation, a country in decline."

Trump has imposed an oil embargo on Cuba, which has worsened fuel shortages. This week, the island's energy minister admitted that Cuba has essentially run out of oil.
