Described as Putin's favorite journalist, Russia-Ukraine war correspondent

A Russian journalist, considered one of Vladimir Putin's favorites, has been killed by a landmine while reporting near the Russia-Ukraine border.

Anna Prokofieva, 35, a war correspondent for Russia's state television network Channel One, was killed after the vehicle she and her cameraman were traveling in hit a landmine in Russia's Belgorod region, state television reported on Wednesday.

The landmine was planted by the Ukrainian military, Channel One said, adding that Prokofieva "died while performing her professional duty," in a statement on its website.

Prokofiev's cameraman, Dmitry Volkov, was seriously injured in the explosion in the Russian border region, which has faced frequent drone attacks and shelling from Ukrainian forces amid their withdrawal from the neighboring Kursk region.

The journalist had been covering the war in Ukraine for the pro-Putin network since 2023. At the time, she often shared glamorous photos of herself in military uniforms or casual clothes posing next to soldiers or military equipment.
