More than 3,500 monkeys have invaded central Thailand, causing the city of Lopburi to close all businesses and shoppers to disappear completely.

The Thai city, once a thriving hub for tourists flocking to see the city's wild macaques, is now completely overrun by an army of 3,500 monkeys. All residents are locked in the house for fear of monkeys.

"We live in a cage, but the monkeys live outside," a citizen told AFP.

"Sugar foods can increase monkey productivity and stimulate monkeys to reproduce more," says Suttipong Kamtaptim, from the National Park Department.

Thailand's National Parks Department has had to start a sterilization program in the hope that it will be able to curb the city's rapidly growing monkey population.
