US General: NATO could take Kaliningrad immediately - Russia's reaction is

NATO forces, if necessary, could take the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad in an "unimaginably short time," said General Chris Donahue, commander of US ground forces in Europe and Africa, Defense News reports.

His statement comes at a time of high tensions between the Alliance and Russia and the establishment of a new NATO strategy known as the "Eastern Flank Deterrence Line",  KosovaPress reports.

Donahue claims that today's Allied capabilities allow "the area to be taken off the ground faster than ever before."

NATO's new doctrine envisages strengthening ground forces, integrating the defense industry, and introducing standardized digital systems and launchers in order to achieve rapid coordination on the battlefield.

"The land dimension is not losing importance, it is becoming more important. Now from land you can neutralize areas where the enemy operates. From land you can take control of the sea. We are seeing all of this in Ukraine," Donahue said.

Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the Russian parliament's foreign affairs committee, reacted quickly to Donahue's statements.

"An attack on the Kaliningrad region is tantamount to an attack on Russia. All responses are possible, including the use of nuclear weapons," Slutsky said.

Kaliningrad, a heavily fortified Russian territory nestled between Poland and Lithuania, is surrounded by NATO member states and is just 75 kilometers wide. It is one of the most militarized regions in Europe and has long been a potential flashpoint for conflict between NATO and Russia.

NATO's new defensive configuration is a response to warnings from Western intelligence agencies that Russia could pose a direct military threat to Alliance member countries in the next five years.
