Germany blocks delivery of 40 powerful fighter jets to Turkey

The German interim government, led by the Social Democrats and the Greens, has blocked the planned export of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey, German media outlet Handelsblatt reported, citing sources familiar with confidential internal discussions.

According to German government sources, the main reason for the export permit ban is the arrest of Turkish opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges – a move that officials in Berlin have described as “an attack on Turkish democracy.” The opposition in Turkey claims that the charges against Imamoglu are politically motivated.

The former mayor of Istanbul was arrested on March 23 on suspicion of corruption. The charges against him include the dubious purchase of three villas in one of Istanbul's most attractive areas through a construction company owned by his family, in which he owns 60 percent of the shares.
