Germany to nominate Baerbock for UN General Assembly presidency

Germany intends to nominate outgoing Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock for a post at the United Nations.
The German Foreign Office informed Chancellor Olaf Scholz's office and other ministries on Monday of its intention to nominate Baerbock for the post of president of the UN General Assembly, Spiegel and dpa report, Telegraf reports.
Baerbock will leave the foreign ministry in the coming weeks, while her Greens leave the government in Berlin, where Friedrich Merz of the center-right CDU will take over as chancellor in coalition with the Social Democrats.
Baerbock could take on the role, not to be confused with that of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in early June for a one-year term, as internal UN arrangements will see the position held by the “Western Europeans and Others” group, including Germany, in the next session of the General Assembly.
The position has significantly less external influence than the top job, Spiegel noted, as the president's main task is to represent the UN member states as a whole and deliver one of the first speeches at the annual meeting of heads of state and government.
Baerbock, a leading figure in the German Green Party, was the party's candidate for chancellor in 2021, before taking on the role of leading German diplomacy under Scholz.
