Important step forward in the investigation / Tragedy with 241 victims, Air

A black box has been found at the crash site of an Air India plane in Ahmedabad, India's civil aviation minister has announced.

The flight data recorder was recovered within 28 hours by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

All but one of the 242 people on board the London-bound plane died when it crashed into a residential area less than 60 seconds after takeoff on Thursday. An official told the BBC that at least eight people on the ground were also killed.

"The discovery of the black box marks an important step forward in the investigation" and will "significantly help shed light on the disaster," authorities said.

Air India said there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A doctor told the BBC they were relying on DNA from relatives to identify the victims. A police official at the autopsy room told the BBC that the remains of six people had been handed over to families so far after their relatives were able to identify them based on facial features.

The sole survivor of the plane crash, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, is still being treated in hospital for his injuries. "I still can't believe how I got out alive," he told Indian television.
