Former British ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, arrested in Epstein case

Former UK ambassador to the US and prominent British political figure Peter Mandelson has been arrested in London on suspicion of "misconduct in public office".

In an official statement, the Metropolitan Police announced that a 72-year-old man was arrested on Monday, February 23, at an address in Camden. He was taken to a London police station for questioning. The arrest follows raids at two properties in the Wiltshire and Camden areas.

British media report that Mandelson was seen leaving his home in Camden, escorted by plainclothes officers, and was transported by vehicle to police premises.

Police confirmed earlier this month that they had launched a criminal investigation into allegations of misconduct in the exercise of public office.

Mandelson has been a key figure in the Labour Party since the 1980s and one of the architects of its transformation into "New Labour" under Tony Blair. In December 2024, he was appointed the UK's ambassador to Washington by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

His name has been embroiled in controversy over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He was previously removed from an official role after new information emerged about his relationship with Epstein and later resigned from the House of Lords.
