The shortest border in the world/ Only 85 meters between European and African
The natural bridge that connects the former island to the mainland is officially the shortest state border in the world, connecting the territory of Spain and Morocco.

Looking at the map of Spain at first glance it seems that it borders only France and Portugal. Spain has almost 2,000 kilometers of land border with these two countries. However, it shares a much shorter border with Andorra and the United Kingdom in Europe, and in North Africa it has an overseas territory bordering Morocco.

It is also the world's shortest land border, an 85-meter-long section on a natural bridge that connects the cliff in the Mediterranean Sea with the Moroccan coast.

Penon de Velez de la Gomera has been Spanish territory since 1564, when it was conquered by Admiral Pedro de Estopinan. The area is close to 19,000 square meters, a little less than three football fields. Although Morocco repeatedly demanded the return of this territory, Spain never agreed. Additionally, military units enforcing Spanish rule are stationed on the rock.

Penon de Velez de la Gomera is one of the sovereign territories that Spain has in North Africa, along with the more famous Ceuta and Melilla, and several other "micro" territories and islands. Formally and legally, the rock is part of the "non-autonomous territory under Spanish administration".
