Who is Khaled Meshaal taking the reins of Hamas?

After the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leadership of Hamas abroad passed to Khaled Meshaal, at least following diplomatic indications from Turkey.

For him it is a return to the leadership of the Palestinian Islamic movement, as he had taken the same role before the rise of Haniyeh. It is reported that the decision was made after a phone call between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Meshal, considered a "temporary" regent necessary to keep a dialogue channel open with Hamas during the war in Gaza.

Ankara is also at the center of a diplomatic battle, sparked when the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv chose to fly its flag at half-mast in mourning for Haniyeh's death.

Hamas attributes responsibility for the killing, which took place in Iran following an airstrike, to Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The Israeli government did not appreciate the gesture. Meanwhile, Hamas has denied killing its military leader Muhammad Al-Deif, whom Israel claimed to have killed last July 13.

On August 2, Hamas denied that Muhammad Al-Deif, head of the Palestinian fundamentalist group's armed wing in Gaza, had been killed. On August 1, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant announced via social media that Al-Deif, the "Osama Bin Laden of Gaza," had been eliminated on July 13, calling the killing "an important historical moment in the process of dismantling Hamas." both the military and the government authority in Gaza.

According to broadcaster Al-Arabiya, Hamas representative Mahmoud Mardawi denied killing the military leader, confirming that "Al-Deif is fine and follows Israel's alleged statements about his assassination."

Phone call between Turkey and Meshaal
According to Turkish media reports, on August 2, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke on the phone with Khaled Meshaal, founder, leader and former political director of Hamas in the past. The two discussed Haniyeh's death and their next steps moving forward. The assassination of the Hamas leader in Tehran has made the negotiations to end the conflict even more complex. Based on what was announced by Ankara, pending a possible new official investment, the Turkish government considers Meshaal the leader and point of contact within Hamas. Meshaal had officially retired from political life and no longer held positions within the Palestinian movement. However, in recent years he has always been at the head of the organization's representation abroad. Khaled Meshaal had also accompanied Haniyeh on a recent visit to Turkey, where they were welcomed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Rise of the "Living Martyr"
Born in the West Bank, Meshaal moved with his family to Jordan after the Six Day War. In 1987, when Hamas was founded, Meshaal became secretary of the movement's Kuwait-based section, but was forced to leave the country in 1990 and return to Amman, Jordan. In the Jordanian capital in 1997, the Palestinian politician survived an assassination attempt by two Israeli agents. The plan, conceived when Benjamin Netanyahu was prime minister, failed. The two agents, who entered the country on a fake Canadian passport, injected a progressive dose of poison into the Hamas leader's ear during a public event, but were arrested. Jordanian King Hussein negotiated with Netanyahu to obtain an antidote for the poison from Israel.

Also thanks to the atmosphere of "living martyr" attributed to him after this episode, Meshaal managed to climb the ranks of Hamas after the assassination by Israel of the spiritual leader, Sheikh Yassin and his successor Abdel Aziz al Rantisi in 2004. Under the leadership of Meshaal, the Islamist movement managed to achieve a major victory in the Gaza Strip in the 2006 elections. In 2017 he left the party's leadership to become the head of the political office abroad, which he subsequently left behind Haniyeh's choice. Like him, Meshaal has lived in exile for years, away from the Gaza Strip.
