Texas border fight: 27-year-old shot dead, two federal agents injured

A 27-year-old man was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents in Texas today. The young man, identified as Ryan Lewis, was carrying a rifle and had other weapons hidden in his car when he opened fire on federal agents.

The exchange of gunfire between the 27-year-old and federal agents occurred at the gates of a Customs and Border Protection facility on the Texas border. Two agents who were pursuing the perpetrator were also injured in the incident.

" Border Patrol agents returned fire and killed the suspect ," the chief told reporters. The exchange of fire involved dozens of bullets, Rodriguez said. Foreign media reports say the FBI is leading the investigation into the incident.

Monday's shooting is the latest in dozens of violent incidents at federal immigration facilities across the country due to the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies. Last Friday, a local police officer was shot and several armed individuals were arrested in an incident near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Alvarado, Texas, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

And in Portland, Oregon, local police said they observed a number of federal law enforcement activities Friday outside another ICE facility, which has been the site of numerous protests in recent weeks. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanch reported both incidents Saturday — calling them “attacks” on DHS facilities — and said the Justice Department has “zero tolerance for attacks on federal officers.”
