Italian media: Meloni is sick, this is what the prime minister is suffering from

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has postponed her year-end conference to January 4, due to her suboptimal health condition. According to the Italian media, Meloni has a problem with "otoliths" that has forced him to stay in bed and in the dark for almost two days.

On Wednesday evening, Meloni was visited at home by an ENT doctor, who diagnosed "otolytic syndrome" and performed maneuvers to resolve the situation.

Initially, the prime minister's associates explain, it was thought that the symptoms such as loss of balance and dizziness that appeared to Meloni were "a consequence of the flu".

The prime minister had been suffering from nausea and dizziness for several days, causing her to suspect her middle ear.

At the end of the visit, the ENT specialist concluded that the diagnosis for Meloni was "benign paroxysmal positional vertigo".

"Already this morning, after the maneuver and with the collar preventing sudden movements, she got up and is getting better. It will take a few more days as a precaution," said the doctor.

But what are otoliths?

They perform an important function in the inner ear, which is to regulate the balance of the body. Otoliths are small particles, composed of oxalate and calcium carbonate, embedded in a gelatinous substance that covers the otolithic organs of the vestibular system: utricle and saccule.

Otoliths, being denser than the gel that surrounds them, move based on the position and movement of the head, stimulating the sensory hair cells of the ear. These, in turn, transmit signals to the brain that indicate changes in the acceleration of the body in space.

In some circumstances, otoliths can detach from the gelatinous matrix and migrate into the semicircular canals, which are responsible for the perception of head rotation. In this way, the semicircular canals receive inaccurate information and become hypersensitive to changes in head position that would normally have no effect. This situation causes benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which is manifested by short but intense episodes of dizziness.
