Microsoft unveils world's most powerful AI data center

Microsoft has announced that in early 2026 it will launch the world's "most powerful artificial intelligence center," a giant complex in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, called Fairwater.

This data center is specifically designed for training and operating large AI models and will span an area of 127 hectares, with three buildings.

Inside will be “hundreds of thousands” of Nvidia GB200 and GB300 GPUs, connected by fiber optics that, according to CEO Satya Nadella, would be enough to circle the Earth 4.5 times. He promised that the performance would be ten times higher than the current fastest supercomputer.

Microsoft has not provided details on the exact number of GPUs or power consumption, but it does emphasize that Fairwater will use an innovative closed-loop water cooling system, which is supplied only once during construction and creates no water waste.

The hot water will pass through side cooling panels and be cooled by 172 6-meter-long fans before being recirculated. About 10% of the servers will be cooled with outside air, switching to water only on the hottest days.

In another post, president Brad Smith assured that the project is being planned to avoid increasing energy costs for the surrounding community.

The construction of Fairwater involves colossal proportions: 12.2 million kg of structural steel, 200 km of medium-tension cables and 116 km of mechanical piping. The storage systems alone occupy an area the size of five football fields.

According to Scott Guthrie, several identical Fairwater centers are already under construction in other US states, signaling a major expansion of Microsoft's artificial intelligence capabilities.
